The Black Dog can be Tamed

By Michael Date

The first time I did the run to The Red Centre I was driven by what happened at my daughters school a few years earlier when a student had committed suicide and the school but their collective head in the sand. Probably due to old fashioned thinking and not understanding how to deal with it. I think this school has now learnt and hopefully would react differently today. What I have seen in the last few years is a lot more mental illness out their, maybe I have been looking for it or maybe now I see it for what it is and how so many people suffer from it. I have seen it in my mates from school in my old workplace (RAN Submarine) and in my friends. I have had a few friends who needed help in hospital both old and young. Every year in Australia, 1,000,000 adults and 100,000 young people live with depression, 50% won't seek treatment and nearly 3,000 will take their own lives every single year. These figures are outrageous we have to do what we can to change this. We need society to accept it for what is a sickness that can be overcome by the right help and understanding. We need more facilities more trained people to help and that all takes money. Since 2009 the Black Dog Ride has raised over $2.2 Million dollars for mental health services, fostering mental health awareness around the country. Every cent goes direct to were it is needed. All donations over $500 will receive a mounted Certificate of Appreciation. I want to raise $10,000. All donations count so please do what you can. Thanks Michael
